25th April 2024
17:30—18:40
About this event
Winchester School of Art and WSA Exchange are pleased to invite you to the next Fashion Thinkers event, which will take place on Thursday 25th April at 17:30 on the University of Southampton’s Winchester School of Art Campus. We are delighted to welcome Nicholas Daley to speak at this event in the Fashion Thinkers series.
About the speaker
“I believe every designer has a responsibility to continue to explore and challenge social issues that are present within our society.” With the three core values of community, culture and craftsmanship informing everything he does, designer Nicholas Daley is a true multi-hyphenate. His meticulously researched collections utilising bespoke fabrics that subtly subvert traditional textiles, celebrate both his own Jamaican Scottish heritage and the innovation that multi-culturalism brings to design. From ‘Culture Clash’ and ‘Dreader than Dread’ to ‘Calypso’ and ‘Anansi Rhythm’ the titles of Nicholas’ collections make clear the centrality of music to his design process, while others such as ‘Blackwatch’, ‘Juteopolis’, ‘Madras’ and ‘Blue Quilt’ speak of his dedicated championing of global textile traditions. Award-winning designs are just one aspect of this cultural powerhouse, who is also an exhibition curator, collaborates with the likes of Mulberry, Fred Perry, and Chelsea Football Club, has worked with a dazzling line up of black musical icons, supports a number of charitable initiatives, is a passionate educator and has received numerous industry awards. Join Nicholas as he shares with Jonathan Faiers his views on subjects such as the designer as selector, tartan and UK manufacturing to his Woven Rhythms project and karate.
Fashion Thinkers Series
Fashion Thinkers is a new initiative curated by Professor Jonathan Faiers and the Fashion & Textiles Department at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.
Fashion and textiles are central to an understanding of global culture and are one of the most inclusive and effective channels through which today’s most urgent questions can be debated and assumptions challenged.
Fashion Thinkers invites some of today’s most creative, challenging and inspiring designers, artists, curators, writers and makers to discuss what fashion means to them. Instinctually interdisciplinary, inclusive and sustainable, these Fashion Thinkers are united by their belief in the power of clothing and textiles to encourage new ways of thinking, making and being.
Beginning with trailblazing designer and radical Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY on February 22nd, the project continues with Oriole Cullen curator of the V&A’s blockbuster exhibition Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifesto on 19th March, and on April 25th Nicholas Daley, menswear designer and curator celebrated for his exploration of cultural identities, will be Fashion Thinking at WSA.
Guests can join this event in person at Winchester School of Art Campus, University of Southampton.
We encourage guests who wish to register at your earliest opportunity as spaces are strictly limited.
